Using the Unified Program as Agent of Change for Extra-Curricular Activities for Students with Special Needs
Jacobs, David M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
This study will examine and analyze the need for inclusive practices through the scope of extracurricular activities and events. The evidence-based practice continues to demonstrate the benefits of including students with disabilities academically with their non-disabled peers, but the inclusion of students with disabilities has not extended into extra-curricular activities. This study will use the Unified Program through the Special Olympics of New Jersey as a vehicle to initiate change at Mainland Regional High School in Linwood, New Jersey. The program will incorporate athletic and club events for students with and without disabilities. Data will be collected to determine the effectiveness of social relationships between students with and without disabilities. Student mentors, parents and staff members will be surveyed to determine if the program made adequate changes to the inclusive culture at Mainland Regional. In the past, Mainland Regional High School has limited students with disabilities in their involvement in extracurricular clubs and athletics. The duration of the Unified Program will be for one winter athletic season and the extracurricular activities will include, but are not limited to basketball, indoor rowing, and ESports.
