Teacher's Perceptions of Declining NCLEX Pass Rates: An Exploratory Case Study

Students who have graduated from nursing school and licensed nurses have a formidable responsibility to provide quality and compassionate nursing care to their patients. However, after graduation, nursing students must study very hard in the hope to pass the National Council License Examination (NCLEX). In recent years, Atlantic Technical College noted a decline in NCLEX-PN pass rates among graduates. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case was to explore teacher perceptions of declining NCLEX-PN pass rates at a one-year technical college in Southern Florida. The following questions helped guide this research: What are teachers' perceptions of the reasons for the declining NCLEX-PN pass rates? What are teaching practices being used for assisting students to increase their NCLEX-PN pass rates? What are the factors that contribute to low NCLEX-PN pass rates? This research was guided by Bandura's Social Learning Theory (SLT) 1977 and Roger's Person-Centered Approach (PCA) 1959. Data were collected from (n=6) practical nursing (PN) instructors from focus groups and interviews. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis for open codes, axial codes, and themes. Themes were organized using identified codes. The most prominent factors affecting the low NCLEX-PN pass rates were student's life problems, working hours, and inadequate use of new generation practice questions throughout the program. Recommendations for the future research included initiating the application and practice of NCLEX-PN questions.
