Artificial Intelligence Curricula in Post-Secondary Education: Are Programs Adequately Preparing Students for Future Technologies? A Model for Developing Artificial Intelligence Curriculum
Casey, Cindy Lou
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capitol Technology University
The objective of this study is to survey existing and emerging post-secondary computing and technology programs and employment trends in Pennsylvania to determine if college graduates are being prepared for careers in artificial intelligence. Due to low enrollment, colleges and universities are continually revising or restructuring their existing computer science and technology programs by adding new courses in data analytics, data mining, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Not only is this done to entice new students, but also to keep up with industry trends, which are in constant flux. However, these new course offerings may not be sufficiently preparing college graduates to design, develop, and work alongside artificial intelligence and forthcoming artificial general intelligence (AGI). After a review of automation and its impact on the region, a framework for integrating an artificial intelligence and machine learning curriculum into an existing computer information science program will be presented. The model's hardware, coding, software, and ethics will be analyzed to predict the skillsets future AI practitioners will need. From these analyses, curricula recommendations will be made. The Pennsylvania region was chosen for the following reasons: (a) the first U.S. college to offer an undergraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence was Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, PA.; (b) manufacturing robotization is predicted to have a high impact on unemployment in the area; and (c) the recent increase in state grants and funding to retrain displaced workers in current and emerging technologies.
