An Exploration of Secondary School Preparation and College Readiness as Perceived by College Students at a Small Christian University
Nelsen, Stefany Bennett
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Freed-Hardeman University
This qualitative study explored the perceptions of college readiness reported by college sophomores from a private Christian university in the South. Data were collected from 42 participants by electronic questionnaire to investigate (a) the perceived areas of greatest and least preparedness, (b) factors perceived to influence participants' college preparedness, and (c) perceived challenges toward their college success. Qualitative data were analyzed in relation to the type of secondary education received by each participant (i.e., public school, private school, or homeschool). Greatest perceived preparedness was found in the areas of (a) academics, (b) time management, and (c) personal accountability, though unique to the type of secondary schooling received. Furthermore, the perceived factors that influenced college preparedness included (a) advanced academics, (b) time management, (c) academics, and (d) personal accountability, also unique to the type of secondary schooling received. Lastly, perceived challenges across the three groups included (a) time management, (b) environment, (c) personal accountability, and (d) academics.
