This qualitative research is a narrative research study of the experiences of eight post traditional students enrolled in the case study community college. The student participants were invited to be part of this research based on their demographic. Male students over the age of 24, matriculated in a program of study with a minimum of 12 credits completed were the desired population. An intentional effort was made to select the participants from a diverse population of students. Post-traditional students appear to be the highest-growing population of students on American college campuses. About 1/3 of the people who are working and learning are over the age of 30, which is substantial increase over what we saw in the 1980s and 1990s. Carnevale (2015). However, data suggests that male students do not persist at the same level as their female counterparts in higher education. College enrollment has been favoring females since the 1970s (Borzelleca, 2012). Given this increase in post-traditional students, this research study investigated the experiences of eight post-traditional male students as they attempted college-level learning. This dissertation explores what support and services are necessary for male post-traditional students to attain success. Over the course of the fall 2022 semester, a comprehensive qualitative research study was conducted involving eight post-traditional male students at a community college in a suburban New York location. Eight post-traditional community college students participated in this research study. They were all enrolled full-time and matriculated in a program. Six of the eight were genuinely concerned with advancing in their career to provide financial security for their families as well as looking to enhance their sense of accomplishment and self-fulfillment.
