A Full Plate: The Impact of High Expectations and Demands on Teacher Recruitment and Retention
Bradford, Christian
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Southern California
School districts across the country are experiencing high rates of attrition which are causing significant challenges. A growing list of demands and responsibilities, along with the lack of administrator support is often cited as the primary reason of departure by early career educators. This qualitative study researched the expectations of high school teachers as perceived by them and the impact those expectations they had on the desire to remain in teaching or leave. Eleven teachers from the state of California who are in the first 5 years of their career were interviewed for this study. In addition to those teachers sharing their view of the expectations demanded of them, this study explored ways in which teacher preparation programs prepared them for the expectations they experienced as early-career teachers. Finally, the study examined methods whereby administrators can support new teachers and provide opportunities for connectedness and development.
