A Phenomenological Study of What Motivation Factors Contribute to the Lived Experiences of Black Male Teachers in South Carolina
Price, Kori D.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Charleston Southern University
This study aimed to widen the understanding of the need for Black males in public schools, the critical factors related to their underrepresentation, and the reasons they stay in the teaching profession. The study explored what attracts Black male teachers to the teaching profession, what keeps them in the profession, what strategies can be employed to recruit more Black males to the teaching profession, and why students need to be taught by Black male teachers. Despite the increasing diversity of student demographics in public schools, the teacher workforce has not followed the same trend and is still predominantly White and female. Therefore, there is a need to recruit more Black males to the teaching profession, which has been challenging due to their perception of teaching as a low-salaried and unpopular career. The study outlined policy and practice implications for school district personnel to recruit and retain Black male teachers.
