A Comparative Analysis of Worship Leadership Expectations and Required Undergraduate Church Music Courses at Institutions within the Conservative Holiness Movement

In this dissertation, the researcher investigated the level of alignment between the content of required church music courses for the Bachelor of Arts in Church Music (BACM) or its equivalent at institutions of higher education in the conservative holiness movement (CHM) and the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs) that are viewed as important for musical worship leaders serving within the movement to possess. The researcher collected data from surveys he distributed to church leaders and musical worship leaders within the CHM to establish which KSAOs were considered important. In addition, he collected data from five institutions of higher education within the CHM regarding their required undergraduate church music courses. He used this data to establish which KSAOs were taught most frequently. He compared these data streams to ascertain which KSAOs reflected alignment and misalignment between curricular training and expectations. He found alignment in the areas of communication skills and music production and technology. He discovered misalignment in interpersonal and spiritual formation categories and foundational music theory. He concluded the study by offering recommendations for how the results could be applied possibly to improve musical worship leader training in the CHM.
