Perceptions of Crisis Leaders Navigating COVID-19
Lech, Emily O'Neal
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
The COVID-19 pandemic had massive implications and ramifications on the nation's public schools, students, and educators alike. Elementary principals transformed into crisis leaders overnight and were greatly challenged. The ability for principals to lead through crises was worth exploring to ascertain the necessary attributes for effective leadership. This study aimed to examine kindergarten-sixth grade elementary leaders' perceptions and experiences by employing a mixed methods approach following ethical, permission, and confidentiality guidelines. Data were collected through an elementary leader survey, elementary leader 1:1 interviews and an elementary leader focus group within the Yorkville District 115 that spanned across the preschool sixth grade levels. Elementary leader survey dissemination and focus group and 1:1 interviews took place in the summer of 2021. The research results indicated that a high level of energy and time was required of the elementary leaders to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of them had to make sacrifices in different ways, impacting their personal life. Their style, approach, and effectiveness were also affected due to the pressure and demands. The following attributes were perceived as the most significant for effective leadership: Comfortable with the unknown, empathy and understanding, grit and courage, and emotional stability/steady force. These attributes were essential because leaders had to finally sustain their role over time. This study shed light on the crucial role and influence of crisis leaders. Lastly, the study emphasized the need for intentionality and care by all educators for their mental health and by the learning environments and school systems.
