Why Am I Tripping? A Mixed-Method Study Investigating Teachers' Coping Mechanisms during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Bell, Alexis Cole
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Virginia State University
This research study investigated the trauma that teachers experienced and the coping mechanisms that they found effective while attempting to complete their duties during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study will be beneficial for school districts to be able to provide effective stress management and resources for their employees. The following research questions will be answered within this study; 1) How do teachers perceive the trauma they experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on their safety, physiological health, and selfefficacy? and 2) Which trauma coping mechanisms (district-based or individual) were the most effective in helping teachers complete their duties and responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic? This research was rooted in the works of Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of needs as well as Albert Bandura's Self-Efficacy Theory. This mixed methods explanatory phenomenological study surveyed 213 participants and interviewed four traumatized teachers to identify how they best dealt with trauma while teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings uncovered some district-based support that allowed employees to cope. However, there were additional personal strategies that were deemed more effective through qualitative research. The intention is that this research will be used to assist school districts in creating, implementing, and sustaining effective coping strategies/programs for their employees. It is also the aim of this study for individuals to be able to adopt or implement coping strategies that they deem beneficial for dealing with the trauma they have experienced while teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, it was found that coping strategies alleviated or maintained teachers' stress levels during the COVID-19 pandemic.
