Making Tactile Pictures More Available: Techniques & Communities
Johnson, Nicole E.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Colorado at Boulder
This work addresses visual content accessibility for blind and low vision communities through the lenses of technique development and community engagement with an overarching question of "How can we make tactile pictures more available?" This inquiry takes a participatory, action-based design approach to break this question down based on the two lenses. The first stage of inquiry focuses on present and future tactile image techniques, leading to the development of a novel production approach using a commercially available cutting machine. The next stage explored the existing and the developed techniques in practice through four separate case studies. This work contributes new and deeper understanding to tactile reading literacy and content availability by leveraging insights gained through design and community interactions.
