Improving Teacher's Understanding and Skill Development through Using Standards-Based Assessments
Eutsler, Jeffrey A.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
This study explored the uneven development of assessments by elementary physical education teachers that contributed to students' underdeveloped physical education skills. This current research was developed to investigate the need to focus on a teacher's understanding of assessment development using the Maryland State Physical Education Framework (2020) standards. A cohort of elementary physical educators reviewed and revised the assessment framework (2020) and developed example assessments for each grade and skill level during the 2021 Maryland Department of Education summer workshop. This completed research was disseminated and used in the school system for the 2021-2022 school year. After surveying, compiling, and reviewing the findings from the cohort participants, along with current research and literature on the topic, there was an increase in teacher achievement. The outcome shows that when supported by a cohesive instructional program that uses a state reference of standards, regardless of curriculum, the assessment development is an effective way to increase teacher effectiveness.
