A Quantitative Comparative Analysis of Military Student Academic Success Rates to the General Student Population within the University System of Georgia

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of West Georgia
Military students face many challenges in the transition from military life to higher education. From psychological, mental health issues, career changes, and difficulties interacting and building relationships, many obstacles can delay or stop a military student's path to degree attainment. This study sought to determine if military students are persisting and graduating at similar rates as their non-military peers within one university system. Research describes potential challenges this student population is commonly known to face within the transition to a higher education environment from military life and the effect this experience and transition might have on their academic success at higher education institutions. Within this study, student-level data were compiled for multiple cohorts within each institution for a cross-institution and internal institution review. Results of this study pointed to a statistically significant difference in the graduation rates for two out of the four cohorts and all military students in all four cohorts graduated at a lower rate. The results also indicated a lower retention rate for the military student population than the non-military student population.
