Food Insecurity and the Community College Experience: An Analysis of Obtainment of SNAP Benefits, Academic Performance, and Retention
Griner, Amanda Heather
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Notre Dame of Maryland University
The purpose of this study was to analyze whether relationships between Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) participation and community college student academic performance exist. Information from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) was used to determine which students may otherwise qualify for SNAP benefits. The data analyzed for students with and without SNAP benefits during the fall 2017 semester included: overall GPA at the conclusion of the fall 2017 semester, earned credit hours for the fall 2017 semester, retention rates into the spring 2018 semester, and GPA at the conclusion of the spring 2018 semester. This study was conducted over the period of one academic year period at a Mid-Atlantic community college. It included information on SNAP benefit obtainment for the entire population studied through the state department of social services, in addition to self-reported data for clarification. Quantitative data was analyzed regarding retention and grade point averages. Overall, the study found that students who had SNAP benefits during the fall 2017 semester did have a slightly higher GPA at the conclusion of the fall 2017 semester and were more likely to re-enroll for spring 2018, compared to students who did not have those benefits. The statistical analysis also found that in fall 2017, full-time students without SNAP benefits were more likely to re-enroll as full-time students in spring 2018 and earn more credits during the fall 2017 semester than their non-SNAP counterparts.
