Winning the Race to Change: A Case Study of One District's Approach to Technology Implementation
Testone, Christopher
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aurora University
This qualitative case study seeks to uncover the groundwork that was laid which enabled one school district to implement a major change initiative, the implementation of 1:1 technology, in a significantly short period of time. Given the slow nature of change in education, this initiative was successfully executed in four months from the time leadership made the decision to move forward. The study fused the work of Thomas Kuhn (Scientific Revolution), Thomas Sergiovanni (Moral Leadership, and Michael Fullan (The Six Secrets of Change) together to establish a theoretical framework for change by which to analyze the data. The intention of the framework is to organize the components of change in a visual way to help the reader understand how a multifaceted framework can help identify the complexities of change within an actual case. Participants in the study include the district leadership responsible for the decision-making process. Additionally, planning documentation and school board documents were included in the data set. The data was presented in a narrative fashion intended to tell the story of the district's experience through the eyes of its leaders. The data revealed several of the themes established within the theoretical framework; there were themes from the framework, missing from the data collected. Both are discussed within the final chapter of the study. The study concludes with implications for leadership, and recommendations for future research, and for leaders seeking to navigate the complexities of change efficiently and effectively.
