Washington, Toya M. Burke
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This qualitative study examined the experiences of faculty members who have participated in cross-racial mentoring experiences at four-year public universities. This study explored faculty members' experiences and the impact of race on the relationship. Mentoring was an avenue that positively impacted the trajectory of the mentees' careers. This study explored the experiences of mentors and mentees in cross-racial mentoring relations and the effects of the relationship on the personal and professional lives of the participants. The study participants included eight full-time faculty members employed at four-year public universities in a cross-racial mentoring relationship. Data were recorded via Zoom audio-recorded interviews. The data analysis revealed six themes: mentor support, communication, availability, career advancement opportunities, organic relationships, and factors affecting the relationship. The study revealed two key findings: common interests, culture, and gender were more significant factors than race in the mentoring relationship, and mentoring positively affected the personal and professional lives of the participants. Further research is recommended to expand the participant criteria to include faculty of community colleges, private universities, and part-time or retired faculty members. Further research is also recommended to explore the relationship between cross-racial mentoring success and the participants' area of study and to explore the mentoring experiences of different races in cross-racial mentoring relationships.
