Empowering Student Voice in Eastern India: An Exploration of Students' Needs

Student input is usually limited to expression, while collaboration and leadership increase student engagement and investment. This study sought to collect and elevate the voices of students from a small school for girls in rural East India. Participants included staff and former students. During multiple cycles of data collection, participants engaged in individual interviews, group interviews, and surveys. They shared experiences and concerns, illuminating the personal and school lives of girls. Action steps included the creation of an exit interview tool and protocol for use by the school. Evaluating the results of the action research study included a questionnaire. Participants and collaborators provided critical feedback during member checking, and group interviews guided the uncovering of three core student needs, clarity, security, and ownership.
