The Prevalence of Test Anxiety in Pre-Licensure Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Students
Figi-Smith, Meredith Brooks
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Bryan College of Health Sciences
Accelerated baccalaureate nursing (ABSN) programs educate students faster than traditional nursing (BSN) programs; programs are 12-20 months and demanding. Research established test anxiety exists among BSN students; however, there is limited research on test anxiety in ABSN students. This study sought to identify prevalence of test anxiety among ABSN students. A descriptive non-experimental survey design was used with a convenience sample of ABSN students in the United States. 163 participants volunteered to take the Test Anxiety Inventory, which measures frequency of test anxiety experienced before, during and after the exam. Additionally, this study sought to identify a predominance of worry or emotionality, and any relationship in test anxiety scores compared to semester enrolled. It was found that test anxiety, emotionality, and worry existed in all participants without statistical significance. There was no correlation between test anxiety and semester enrolled in the ABSN program. Test anxiety, worry, and emotionality exist among ABSN students regardless of semester enrolled. This information allows ABSN program educators evidence to change and adapt programs to ease test anxiety in ABSN students.
