Virtual Bodega: Promoting Access through Equity and Best Practice for Hispanic and Latino Students
Matias-Castro, Aileen
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New Jersey City University
Historically, bodegas or corner stores are linked with hundreds of thousands of Latinos that left the Caribbean after World War II and came to live in New York barrios. These stores tailored their products to the needs of Hispanics and Latinos, providing a place for people to purchase products from their country of origin. Today, bodegas sell a wide range of merchandise and remain a staple within Hispanic and Latino communities. "Virtual Bodega" is a website built to meet the growing needs of a school community whose English Language Learners are comprised of growing Latino and Hispanic students. The site serves as an intervention resource for parents and teachers. Its contents are intended to address the needs revealed throughout this action research. This study resulted in a virtual space for parents and teachers to access resources, information, and tools to maximize equity for English Language Learners.
