School as a Community Hub: An Intrinsic Case Study of Midwest Elementary School
Williams, Matthew D.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Doane University
The purpose of this intrinsic case study was to explore the participants' perceptions of how Midwest Elementary School (a pseudonym) serves as a community hub. A school that is a community hub is a school that partners with community organizations--such as businesses, churches, and services--to meet the needs of students, families, and the community. Data were collected using semi-structured in-person interviews of Midwest Elementary School staff members and individuals involved with community partners. Relevant documents were also examined to discover pertinent information and add to historical data. The guiding principles that emerged from this study derived from the themes identified: relationships, impact/value, and leadership. The principles also received support from existing literature. The three principles are interrelated: Strong leadership requires positive relationships, and positive relationships and leadership create opportunities that provide impact or value for students and their families. Leadership is needed to identify areas that partnerships can support or supplement needs in the community hub. Leaders at all levels must be able to work together for the synergy of the community hub. Relationships were often the catalyst of the hub evolving and growing as many partnerships began from people who knew each other. Impact and value can be the litmus test to determine a school as community hub's effectiveness. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
