Assessing Elementary General Education Teachers' Knowledge of Suicide Risk in Students
Velardi, Christine S.
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Fairleigh Dickinson University
The present study hypothesized that specific demographic variables (e.g., experience, education, attendance of workshops/trainings) would influence elementary general education teachers' knowledge on suicidal risk factors, interventions, and application of knowledge. 165 participants (121 females, 44 males) recruited from a suburban school district in the northeastern United States were surveyed with an instrument utilized from previous research. Three separate ANOVAs were conducted to investigate the association among each demographic variable on the participants' knowledge of youth suicide. The results of the study proved to be statistically significant. It was found that participants who reported having more years of experience (e.g., 25-45 years), a Master's degree plus credits, and attended district trainings or multiple trainings demonstrated greater knowledge of suicidal risk factors. There were no significant findings between the demographic variables and knowledge of intervention or application of knowledge. This study discusses implications for school-based mental health professionals and teachers. One area of strength in this study was the teachers' knowledge of the district's suicide ideation policy. This finding is a difference from past studies which found a lack of knowledge within this area. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
