College Preparation: A Detailed Discussion of Secondary Educational Leaders Experiences
Howard, Alexis L.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
This qualitative study investigated the action steps, barriers, and results of the college preparation interventions of bridge programs, appointing additional guidance counselors ,involving parents, aligning curriculum, and promoting achievement. This research was exploratory in nature because the researcher explained how college preparation operates in Houston area secondary schools. Prior research has concluded that college preparation correlates directly with achievement outcomes and degree attainment. Limited research has been conducted to evaluate how college preparation is practiced. Respondents participated in structured interviews using a hybrid approach of qualitative methods of thematic analysis. The interviews allowed participants to describe their experience with college preparation practices' implementation, challenges, and successes. Results suggested that secondary educational leaders are attempting to prepare students for post-secondary education but are experiencing challenges. This study provides state leaders and stakeholders a research perspective on the challenges facing education and identifies evidenced-based ways that state policy can address them.
