The Transformative Experiences of Global Citizenship Educators: A Case Study
Neill, Jeffrey Roy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
The increased focus on globalism and globalization in the world has added new dynamics to the roles expected of educators in international schools. As school seek to ready their students to navigate this increasingly complex world, they are confronted with the charge of developing within them a host of capacities categorized under the aegis of global citizenship. Schools the world over have redoubled their focus and attention on cultivating these attributes within their students. However, what precisely falls within this domain of global citizenship is debated as are the approaches to most effectively delivering global citizenship education. This study sought to examine the experiences of educators at an international high school both in how they developed as global citizens themselves and in how they attempt to deliver global citizenship education to their students. The research employs Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) in a case study to examine the research question of: How do practitioners within secondary schools explain and describe the process of developing into global citizens? The interviews and subsequent analysis resulted in three essential conclusions. First, the study confirmed the inherent challenges of definition within the domain of global citizenship. Second, the research examined the apparent contradiction between the participants' experience in becoming global citizens and their intended approaches to develop global citizenship within their students. Third, the research suggests a model for describing the development of global citizenship within adults and youth. Ultimately, the research is significant in its expansion upon the current field of literature and its informing of the areas of continued growth and development of global citizenship research and practice.
