The Lived Experiences of Doctoral-Level Student Supervisors Addressing the Wellness of Counselors-in-Training Supervisees
Jasso, Jesusa Elena
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi
Limited research is available regarding doctoral-level students who serve as supervisors to counselors-in-training (CITs), making it difficult to understand the role doctoral students play in supervision with CITs. There is even less research available regarding doctoral-level student supervisors addressing the wellness of CITs in supervision. Both the experiences and impact of addressing wellness within the doctoral supervisory relationship are valuable in understanding how to support doctoral students and CITs better. As doctoral students assume the role of supervising CITs, training on the signs and symptoms of impairment, as well as the introduction of wellness-focused supervision models, should be made available to meet an already existing need for broaching wellness in supervision. This includes preparing doctoral students to address CIT wellness to assist CITs in developing their counseling skills and professional identities as counselors. The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of doctoral-level student supervisors addressing the wellness of their counselors-in-training supervisees. Implications for further research and future counselors-in-training, doctoral students, and counselor educators are provided.
