North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (43rd, Philadelphia, PA, Oct 14-17, 2021)
In this paper, I propose a new construct named "analytic equation sense" to conceptually model a desired way of reasoning that involves students' algebraic manipulations and use of equivalent expressions. Building from the analysis of two existing models in the field, I argue for the need for a new model and use empirical evidence to explain the new model. [For the complete proceedings, see ED630060.]
