The Role of Emotional Intelligence Training in Educational Leadership: A Correlational Analysis
Rodriguez, Rosalinda
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if principals' emotional intelligence has a relationship to their schools' climate. The problems addressed by this research was that leadership preparation programs do not include training and development in emotional intelligence as a leadership skill. In addition, school districts do not offer emotional intelligence training to their leaders as part of their professional development, despite the existing research indicating the importance of emotional intelligence in educational leadership. This research provides school districts and university leadership the knowledge to support including emotional intelligence in their professional development and curriculum for leaders. This quantitative correlational designed was conducted using a voluntary sampling method that yielded seven principals who completed the EQ-I 2.0 to rate their own emotional intelligence. In addition, 22 teachers completed the EQ-360 to rate their principals' emotional intelligence, and the School Climate Survey to rate their school climate. A Spearman's rho correlation was used to assess the relationship between the two variables, principals' emotional intelligence score and their school climate score. The data analysis results revealed a weak positive relationship between the variables, but statistically significant to reject the null hypothesis and deduct that there is a relationship between a school leaders' emotional intelligence and their schools' climate. This study concluded with three recommendations for leaders and practitioners to advance the academic knowledge in the field. The researcher also explored other approaches to this research that could yield different outcomes in future research through three recommendations for future research.
