Parent Perspectives on Interprofessional Collaborative Practice and Teamwork in Early Intervention
Fielder, Johnny D.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
It is not known how parents of preschool children birth to three years of age with severe disabilities describe their experience with the special education team and communication with team members when included in teamwork using a model consistent with interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP). The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to describe how parents of these children reported their experience with the special education team and communication with team members when included in teamwork using a model consistent with IPCP. Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory served as the theoretical background for this study. The study was guided by two research questions: How do parents of preschool children birth to three years with severe disabilities describe their experience with the special education team when included in teamwork using a model consistent with interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP); and how do these parents describe the importance of communication between parents and team members consistent with IPCP? The researcher obtained data from 13 individual interviews and a focus group of eight participants. Data analysis produced four themes: (1) Relationship-based care matters for positive parent experience. (2) IPCP provides framework for positive parent experience, (3) Parents bring their own agenda for a positive experience. (4) Communication is vitally important for positive parent experience. Conclusions from this study demonstrated that parents reported a positive experience when participating on their child's early intervention special education team when the principles of IPCP are utilized for teamwork.
