The Impact of Locus of Control on Student Persistence
Bates, Morris L.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Trident University International
Locus of control is a psychological attribute not often discussed in the community college setting. The purpose of this study sought to investigate the impact Locus of control and co-variates age, gender, ethnicity, enrollment status, and employment status had on community college student persistence. Study participants were First-year community college students enrolled in a First-Year Experience Course. The design of the study was quantitative. 102 students responded to Rotter's I E Locus of Control Scale and a demographic questionnaire. Logistic regression was conducted to analyze the data. Analysis of the data revealed that the regression model was not statistically significant (internal - ?[superscript 2] (5) = 10.510, p = 0.062; external - ?[superscript 2] (5) = 8.876, p = 0.114). Of the covariates, gender; specifically, females with an external locus of control were approximately twice as likely to persist (alpha 0.05, p = 0.011) than males with an external locus of control. Past research has shown that Locus of control and academic achievement (GPA) are correlated, but only amongst university students. This study could prove beneficial to postsecondary administrators in the retention of community college students in helping them understand the motivation of community college students pursuing a degree since GPA and achievement are not the primary motivators of their persistence. Still, there is great benefit in facilitating assessments (scales) to community college students that help them to learn about themselves and how to employ that information academically and vocationally.
