Student Perceptions of Their Spiritual Formation in the Online Degree Program at Southwestern Christian University
Davis, Bradford O.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Oral Roberts University
Purpose and Method of Study: The purpose of this study explored student perceptions of their spiritual formation in the online undergraduate degree program at Southwestern Christian University. This study was a replication of Lowe's (2007). An explanatory sequential mixed method approach, or QUAN-qual design, was used and the results from the quantitative portion of the study informed the qualitative methodology. The participants in the fully online undergraduate degree program completed the quantitative survey (The Mature Faith Index). The qualitative portion of the study included open-ended questions concerning the strengths and weaknesses of the program and a survey format questionnaire concerning the expectations and experience of spiritual formation in the online degree program courses. The responses from the interviews were grouped under each question. During the analysis of the responses, themes emerged. The Mature Faith Index results, the interview responses, and themes were integrated to draw conclusions to the research questions concerning spiritual formation. Findings and Conclusions: Overall, the findings confirmed that spiritual formation occurred in the online undergraduate degree program at Southwestern Christian University. The results pointed to the expectations and the experience of spiritual formation was positive. In addition, the results indicated that participants desired faculty interaction and concern for their spiritual formation.
