The Induction of the Generation Z Teacher in a Lutheran High School

The purpose of this qualitative collective case study was to discover effective induction practices which align with values and characteristics of Generation Z for the purpose of retaining new teachers in Lutheran high schools. The study sought to address teacher shortages by improving the retention of new teachers through the implementation of effective teacher induction practices. Two groups of educators from four Lutheran high schools in a Midwest metropolitan region participated in the study. The two groups from each school were Generation Z teachers and their supervising administrator. The study was a qualitative collective case study involving four different schools, five Generation Z teachers, and four administrators. The key research questions were as follows: (1) What induction practices do Lutheran high schools use with Generation Z teachers?; (2) What do administrators and teachers believe is the purpose of induction experiences?; (3) What induction practices are perceived to be effective for Generation Z teachers?; (4) What induction practices are perceived to be ineffective for Generation Z teachers?; (5) What characteristics of Generation Z teachers should be considered when inducting them into a new school?; and (6) What recommendations do administrators and Generation Z teachers have for improved teacher induction? Emergent themes associated with the research questions of the study were analyzed and five recommendations emerged for all school leaders to consider regarding the induction of the Generation Z teacher. These recommendations focus on developing comprehensive induction programs, addressing issues of mental health and isolation, and leveraging Generation Z knowledge to improve instruction in every classroom.
