Perception of Mentorship and Preceptor Development for Athletic Trainers
Matuseski-Lowy, Nicole
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
This study examined the current perception of preceptor development experience in New Jersey athletic training education programs, and determined how mentorship may be included in this development. Preceptors are responsible for the supervision and evaluation of athletic training students in live clinical scenarios. Athletic training education standards dictate the coordinator of clinical education is responsible for the professional development of the preceptor, and must create an effective learning environment while tailoring it to the needs of the preceptors (Brown et al., 2018). Research indicates mentorship plays a vital role in the preceptor/student relationship; similarly, mentorship may transfer into the experienced/novice preceptor relationship. Using a mixed methods approach, a survey was sent to athletic trainers in New Jersey asking about the topics covered in preceptor development, comfort level following preceptor development, and perceptions of a preceptor peer mentorship program. Findings showed more information should be presented during preceptor development to increase the preceptors' comfort in the role. In addition, preceptors are willing to participate and perceive value in a peer mentorship program. The recommendations provided from the results of the study should aid coordinators of clinical education in developing thorough preceptor development and aid in the formation of a peer mentorship program.
