Community, Discipleship, and Digital Technology: A Mixed-Method Longitudinal Study of Hispanic Pastors Pre and Ex Post Facto COVID-19 Pandemic Outbreak
Sanchez-Estevez, Ricardo Augusto
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
This dissertation is a longitudinal descriptive study of the dynamics of community and discipleship and their relationship to technology adoption among Southern Baptist Hispanic pastors in North Carolina. The perusal of the unique forces of these dynamics and their correlational tensions set the stage for understanding the perceptions and use of technology in the pastoral agency to Hispanics. In the exercise of the Great Commission, each local church must seek its own fine balance between embracing technology and rejecting it. The stay-at-home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, posed on the church an unavoidable paradigm shift. The data for this study was collected in two waves. In the first wave, 22 pastors were interviewed using a mixed-method instrument in the fall of 2019. Then in the fall of 2021, a second wave was collected from 9 subjects from the same sample of the first wave through a qualitative instrument that measured the changes in perception, competence, and use of technology in the Hispanic churches peri and post the pandemic. Among the findings of this research, the drastic perception shift and eager disposition toward technology adoption among Hispanic pastors is stunning. Also, the new technological platforms that emerged during the pandemic rendered a new type of church that adapts quickly and responds thoroughly, without compromising the tenets of the Christian faith. The scope extends to include prescriptive arguments related to the fostering of the Christian Hispanic community and enhancing disciple making efforts in the Hispanic local churches and homes with the use of technology in North Carolina.
