Student Affairs Educators and the Climate for Religious Pluralism at a Public University
Ofstein, Jennifer Beth
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, North Carolina State University
This is a case study that uses interviews and archival data to illuminate how student affairs educators at a large public research university in the south perceive and foster the climate for religious pluralism on their campus. The findings from this study indicate that Student Affairs Educators would like to undergo education and training regarding addressing religion on campus during their graduate programs, and by their employer regarding institution specific approaches, interpretations, and expectations about religion on campus. Participants suggested that this training and education should be inclusive of understanding and navigating First Amendment issues, creating and enacting policy with procedural empathy, and navigating difficult dialogues. Findings from this study reflect the external influences such as politics from the local, state, and national levels, inhibit or promote student affairs educators' ability to foster a campus climate for religious pluralism. Finally, the findings from this study indicate that leaders within a public institution should address the institution's history of religious exclusion, and build a culture that is inclusive, representative, internally consistent, and replete with resources.
