Personalized Coaching Model to Address Equity Gaps in Student Learning Outcomes: A Program Evaluation

Higher education institutions across the country have examined equity in education outcomes through disaggregating student demographic data. However, it is not as common for academic institutions to also examine student learning outcomes for inequities in student learning. The current study explores what the greatest contributors are for the lack of disaggregating student learning outcomes for equity gaps. A 12-week personalized coaching model program was developed, implemented, and evaluated as a solution to the identified problem of practice. The personalized coaching model program was implemented at a Northern California community college with six faculty participants. Participants met with a coach one-on-one to review disaggregated assessment data for their current course(s) through reporting dashboards (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender, and age). Faculty participants had access to equity centered assessment and culturally responsive resources throughout the program. The findings showed faculty confidence significantly increased upon completion of the personalized coaching model. Program recommendations and resources for future practitioners interested in implementing a personalized coaching model program are provided.
