Areas of Worklife Related to University Educators' Burnout: A Multiple Regression Analysis

The purpose of study was to examine to what extent, if any, areas of worklife predicted burnout reported by university educators employed in a 4-year degree granting private liberal arts institution of the Midwestern United States. The areas of worklife model and Maslach's burnout model and measurements were utilized to guide this study's examination of the relationship between university educators' areas of worklife and burnout. The study sample of N = 147 was drawn from a non--probability convenience sample representative of university educators. Areas of Worklife Survey and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey were administered together via a single session electronically administered questionnaire. Regression analysis was conducted to analyze the research questions. ANOVA was conducted on the data. The areas of worklife was significantly predictive of Emotional Exhaustion, F(6, 140) = 24.726, R[superscript 2] = 0.514, p < 0.001, and Depersonalization, F(6, 140) = 7.095, R[superscript 2] = 0.276, p < 0.001. The areas of worklife was significantly predictive of personal accomplishment, F(6, 140) = 3.190, R[superscript 2] = 0.120, p = 0.006. It was found that 50% of the participants experienced emotional exhaustion frequently; 3% experienced emotional exhaustion daily; 23% experienced depersonalization frequently; 1% experienced depersonalization daily; 61% experienced personal accomplishment frequently; and 31% experienced personal accomplishment daily. The high experience of personal accomplishment reduced the experience of burnout. The areas of worklife predictors workload and values had a significant relationship with the burnout criterions emotional exhaustion and depersonalization when holding the other predictors constant.
