Student Engagement: A Quantitative Investigation into Gamification's Impact on Student Perceptions to Use Career Services
Domitrovich, Joshua L.
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Indiana University of Pennsylvania
Higher education practitioners continue to search for ways to increase student engagement with career services offices to improve students' career readiness and employability. The use and effectiveness of gamification to increase student engagement in co-curricular environments is an understudied area of educational research. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceived effectiveness of gamification, specifically digital badging, and its ability to motivate students' use of career services. This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional survey, using a single-stage sampling design, to 210 undergraduate and graduate students at an institution of public higher education in the northeastern United States. Findings showed that 70 percent of students agreed that digital badging would motivate them to engage with career services, regardless of their motivational type. These findings provide unique insight into gamification's perceived effectiveness to motivate students' use of career services and provide practitioners with an innovative engagement tool. Recommendations for future research include deeper exploration of student perceptions, the creation of a gamification implementation guide, and additional research examining the effects of implementing this tactic in co-curricular activities and the impact on students' career readiness and post-graduation success.
