ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Leo University
Research in this study investigates teachers' perceptions of professional development (PD) and the characteristics that make up an effective professional development. This study will explore Algebra 1 teachers' perceptions of their PD needs, including their preferred method of PD, preferred time frame, materials, and content they deem to be the most valuable in connection with the current district's curriculum standards, and the connection to professional learning community's (PLC) work. Participants in this study included a sample of approximately 100 middle and high school Algebra 1 teachers, grades 7-10. The teachers varied in years of service from one year to 30 years of service in education. Each participant responded to a 20-question Likert Scale Survey on their perceptions of effective professional development. After the completion of the survey, a sample of 39 of the participating survey participants engaged in an open-ended follow up survey to further the research. Exploring teacher perceptions about their PD needs will raise awareness for school leaders concerning changes that could benefit future teachers' learning experiences with the school district.
