Mindfulness Groups in Addressing College Student Anxiety
Nunziato, Dina R.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, State University of New York at Buffalo
According to the 2019 American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment, 65.7% of college students experienced "overwhelming anxiety" within the last 12 months, up from 49.1% in 2008. In an attempt to address this critical increase in student anxiety with viable and cost-effective interventions, many college mental health centers have begun offering alternative treatment modalities, including student mindfulness groups. To date, research on mindfulness groups has largely relied upon quantitative survey measures, which offer limited insight into student practitioners' lived experiences. Therefore, despite the growing popularity of mindfulness groups, college mental health professionals may not yet have a clear understanding of how college mindfulness groups function to ameliorate student anxiety. In order to address this gap in understanding, this qualitative case study explores the experiences of student mindfulness group practitioners in a small, liberal arts college during the 2019-2020 academic year. Through in-depth interviews, student reflection papers, and primary investigator observations, this study seeks to understand the characteristics and shared practices that exist within a college mindfulness group, including an exploration of how students describe their experiences of participation within a shared community of practice.
