2020 Rhode Island Education Policy Primer
Online Submission
The Rhode Island Education Policy Primer provides an overview of how public education operates in Rhode Island. The Introduction offers context on the inequitable origins of Rhode Island's public school system, as well as the role that activism has played in expanding educational opportunities. The At a Glance section provides a quick look at public school enrollment in Rhode Island--a helpful reference point for the information in the rest of the primer. The remaining chapters discuss enduring topics in education policy. A quick definition or overview of each issue is provided, along with historical or foundational information when applicable. Following are details about how these areas are addressed in Rhode Island. Each chapter ends with Equity Policy Considerations. These considerations are written to help policymakers and stakeholders consider how these policy issues might unduly affect nonwhite, Hispanic, low-income, and emergent bilingual students, and students with disabilities. These considerations are neither exhaustive nor conclusive, but rather serve as a basis for further dialogue and study.
