Momentum Points and Milestones: Low-Income Asian Community College Students
Teshima, Angela S.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Fullerton
Higher education research overlooks the achievement of Asian community college students, possibly due to the stereotypes of Asian students as naturally excelling in academia, perpetuated by the model minority myth. This is concerning, because in California, many of the academic achievements that are used to assess the effectiveness of initiatives, such as the Guided Pathways initiative, are frequently used as outcomes for goals set up in California's Vision for Success. This quantitative causal-correlational study examined the differences in potentially low-income East Asian and Southeast Asian community college students' ability to meet the Guided Pathways momentum point achievements of credit accumulation, college level math, and college level English course completion to better their odds of completing the milestone goal of certificate or degree attainment. A series of chi-square and logistic regression analyses found two statistically significant outcomes. Southeast Asian community college students were more likely to be of low-income status compared to their East Asian peers, and Southeast Asian community college students who were able to complete a college level math course within their first year of enrollment had better odds of earning a certificate or degree.
