Programs and/or Mentors for Newly Admitted Students: Results of the January 2022 60-Second Survey
American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO)
The January 2022 60-Second Survey focused on the availability of different programmatic and mentorship offerings for newly admitted undergraduate and graduate students. In the framework of the survey and report, there is a differentiation between mentor programs and other newly admitted student programming. They prioritize matching newly admitted students with current students who share things in common and can speak to the incoming student's specific questions and experiences. In this context, mentor programs support individualized experiences over more general introductions to campus life. Of the 377 responses, 358 are in the U.S., 13 are in Canada, and 1 is in each of the following: Armenia, Australia, Bahamas, Italy, Kazakhstan, and Vietnam. Some key facts and findings: (1) Most have programs available to connect newly admitted students with enrolled students. The practice is slightly more prevalent for undergraduate students: (a) 73% for undergraduate students; and (b) 67% for graduate and professional students; (2) Nearly two-thirds believe that mentorship programs for newly admitted students should involve peer-to-peer mentorship: (a) 29% of those serving undergraduate students have this type of mentorship program; and (b) 10% of those serving graduate and professional students have this type of mentorship program; and (3) Less than 1 in 5 perceive there to be sufficient mentorship offerings for newly admitted students.
