Hunter-Johnson, Yvonne; Al-Asfour, Ahmed
American Association for Adult and Continuing Education, Paper presented at the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education 2020 Conference (Online, Oct 27-30, 2020)
Career transition can be stressful. This stress level is intensified for veterans who are transitioning between not only careers but also, what is perceived to be, transitioning between worlds, military world to the civilian world. Within a civilian workforce, veterans are often misunderstood and stigmatized, that results in misconceptions and misinterpretation regarding transfer of professional experience and training. Subsequently, creating employment challenges, exclusion, and minimal career development of veterans within the civilian workforce. On this premise, this theoretical paper, utilizing the workforce adjustment theory as an underpinning, discusses: (1) transitional challenges of veterans to the civilian workforce; (2) strategies for promoting diversity and inclusion of veterans; and (3) career development of veterans within the civilian workforce.
