Much is expected from higher education in regard to addressing the challenges that policy makers in the countries of the European Higher Education Area face. Higher education institutions should equip their graduates with the skills and competencies necessary for the successful entry into a volatile labour market, and more importantly, maintain their employability throughout their working lives. Higher education graduates are looked on to give a positive impulse to the European economic and social development in terms of the creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship that are critical to economic growth, to boosting the innovative capacities in the society, and to keeping pace with the evolving knowledge and technological landscape. Higher education should also promote engaged citizenship and democratic values, such as tolerance, openness and critical thinking, and thus contribute to higher levels of social cohesion and trust. There is an increased demand for more transparency in higher education institutions, in order to enhance young people's ability to make effective educational choices, and to promote international mobility. Such mobility is regarded as a powerful means to acquire intercultural understanding, as well as to improve competencies and expand career options for graduates, and to achieve a better allocation of highly skilled labour across the EU. In order to reach these policy goals, it is crucial to have access to high quality data that is comparable across European countries. The goal of the EUROGRADUATE pilot survey is, on the one hand, to test the feasibility of a Europe-wide graduate survey and identify possible obstacles and their solutions. On the other hand, the survey collects comparable data on higher education graduates in Europe. This report presents the main results for Austria. The structure of the report follows societal functions of higher education and presents core indicators with respect to: (1) labour market outcome of higher education; (2) social outcomes of higher education; (3) graduation as a basis for further studies; and (4) international mobility. The situation in Austria will be described with respect to the international context of EUROGRADUATE. Furthermore, sub-groups of particular relevance to the Austrian situation will also be discussed in detail. [This report was co-produced by the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS).]
