Jacquay, Greg
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Stanislaus
A qualitative phenomenological study examining the learning activities that take place at a college radio station. The research objective is to understand the social practices that make possible or hinder the construction of learning experiences at KCSS, the campus radio station at California State University, Stanislaus. Document analysis, interviews and focus groups were used to collect data from recent and former students of the program. Data analysis was conducted using Atlas.ti software and yielded three sets of findings. The first finding characterized the college radio as a third space where students engaged in collaborative projects while receiving feedback from multiple stakeholders. The second finding is presented as a taxonomy of learning activities that take place at KCSS including classwork, internships, student management positions and individual projects. Lastly, the unique learning outcomes students realize are presented including self-confidence, career development and creative problem solving. Conclusions include the value of problem-based learning for emerging adults and potential for transformative experiences within the radio station environment. Recommendations for future practice and research include continued support of college radio stations, increased facilitation of service-learning opportunities, alumni assessment and extracurricular learning opportunities.
