Down but Not Out: School Districts Struggle to Provide Summer Programs. Issue Brief
EdSource
California's grim economic environment has hit summer school programs hard, but all of the state's 30 largest school districts still managed to provide some summer classes for struggling students in 2011, according to an EdSource survey. The July 2011 telephone survey of California's 30 largest school districts, revealed the following three major findings: (1) Most school districts have downsized their summer programs--sometimes drastically; (2) Several districts are running alternatives to traditional summer programs; and (3) Flexibility in state funds enabled districts to reduce summer offerings. Implications of these findings are discussed.
