Crisis Preparedness in Baptist and Formerly Baptist-Affiliated Institutions of Higher Education
Morris, Samuel
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
Crises are becoming part of humanity's everyday conversations. Whether it is sexual abuse scandals, oil spills, poorly worded social media posts, crises are ubiquitous. This paper sought to examine and uncover certain specific predictor variables (e.g. human, facility, criminal, or natural) that exist in Baptist and formerly Baptist higher education institutions that led to preparedness. By using quantitative methods, several statistically significant variables were uncovered using ANOVA tests, all of which suggest that crisis preparedness is established after institutions experienced crises. This study considered 37 different variables finding four to be statistically significant. The statistically significant data was found in relation to crises that involved humans (0.03), the size of institutional employment and the number of occurrences of human crises (0.001), the number of employees and crises experienced range (0.000), and number of employees and crisis range (0.005). This study suggested that Baptist higher education institutions should not be reactionary in crisis preparedness as historical Christian doctrine lays a good foundation for crisis preparedness. Furthermore, there needs to be a clear concept of what constitutes a crisis at responding institutions. Finally, there are many opportunities by which crisis preparedness can be developed at Baptist institutions of higher education.
