Lyrical Interventions: Hip-Hop, Counselor Education, and School-to-Prison
Daneshzadeh, Arash; Washington, Ahmad Rashad
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
The school to prison "nexus" describes the intersecting issues that parlay into draconian outcomes for students of color (Krueger-Henney, 2013). While it is important to critique how teachers and administrators are complicit with extant educational structures, we must not ignore how other educational leaders, like school counselors, notarize the school to prison nexus. Therefore, this paper explores how the field of counselor education can prepare school counselors who see the abolition of the school to prison nexus as integral to their professional identities. In particular, this paper considers how the intersections between the counterhegemonic sensibilities of hip hop culture and school to prison abolition, can inform school counselors as they work with the students most impacted by harsh discipline policies.
