An Investigation into the Discrepancy in College Attendance among Economically Disadvantaged Students from an Urban Community

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
Urban students attend college at a lower rate than their non-urban counterparts. Gathering beliefs and information from college students who have already entered college is common for research. Gathering this information from high school students, who have not yet matriculated is less common and the goal of this paper. This qualitative study's purpose is to describe the primary factors influencing how economically disadvantaged students in an urban high school make the choice to enroll…or not to enroll…in college. Seniors in the high school were requested to participate in this data. A small sampling of the students agreed to participate and then a few were willing to participate in a focus group where answers were clarified. Results indicated students need a strong sense of self-efficacy which needs to be built by the adults the students come in contact. This needs to be done at an early age so it can be fully developed throughout their lives. The school has much to offer the students but the students indicated they did not know this guidance was available and were struggling to complete tasks on their own. Students also need to be given information and assistance aiding them through the myriad of paperwork necessary for college enrollment.
