Motivating African American Male Readers through Mentorship
Bolton, Dawn
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Union Institute and University
Reading fluency and comprehension are necessary to successfully function in school, work, and society. A 2015 study by the National Center for Educational Statistics indicates that the dropout rate for African American males is significantly higher than the national overall dropout rate. Since proficiency in reading strongly correlates with high school completion rates, more must be done to encourage and promote literacy in these at-risk populations. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of an African American adult reading mentor on adolescent African American males' reading motivation and reading efficacy. The mentorship was delivered in the form of an all-male book club featuring books with African American youth protagonists. Measures of self-reported attitudes toward reading was used to gauge program effectiveness. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
