Peralta, Laverne Y.
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Capella University
Parents have the ability to influence the educational achievements of their children who are in college by implementing strategies and techniques that will support them. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the parental involvement of Filipino-American parents who were instrumental in helping their children complete their college education. Little or no study has been undertaken on this subject. A basic qualitative design was used for this research and semistructured interviews were conducted to explore the participants' experiences. The inclusion criteria for study participants included Filipino-American parents who were instrumental in helping their children graduate from college in the United States. Using social capital theory as a foundational element, the qualitative methodology enabled the researcher to explore the experiences of these Filipino-American parents and the strategies they used to help their children in their quest to complete a college degree. The results of this study showed the extent of parental involvement and support in their children's college education. The parents played a vital role as they shared and applied their own college experiences in helping their children prepare for college. From helping their children select which college institution to enroll in to assisting them accomplish their academic goals on the basis of the effective strategies and techniques that they implemented, these Filipino-American parents proved that their active educational involvement and participation became worthwhile and beneficial. Overall, the results and findings of this research will provide valuable insights to other parents, especially those who came to the United States as immigrants.
